Composer Paul Bowles traveled some twenty-five thousand miles around Morocco during the last six months of 1959, recording examples of every major musical genre to be found within the boundaries of the country. He observes, “Moroccans have a magnificent and highly evolved sense of rhythm which manifests itself in the twin arts of music and dance. The quality of the material was uniformly splendid. It was a very difficult task indeed, to make the recordings. The newly formed Moroccan government had no intention of letting a non-Muslim make recordings of Moroccan music. They wanted to be in complete control of the situation and became very upset when I expressed an interest in Berber music. They did not want the material outside of Morocco. To them, it was the music of savages and they were quite embarrassed about Westerneers being afforded the chance to hear it.” (p.9)
